The first section of the journey involves a 10 km ride through rice fields and orchards in Bang Bua Thong district. Upon arrival at Wat Toe there is time for refreshment before boarding the ferry for crossing over the Chao Phraya River to Koh Kret Island. The island is inhabited by Mon people, who pre-date the Siamese in the central plains of present-day Thailand. A cruise round the island includes drop-offs to explore the narrow lanes of the village and its traditional pottery workshops. Local foodstuffs are also renowned, including old-style Thai sweets and herbal wines. Lunch is taken on the island at a riverside restaurant. Return by ferry to the pier at Wat Klang Klang Kret, then transfer by minibus back to your hotel.
Hoi An was a bustling international trading port, a meeting place of merchants from Japan, China, and the West during the 17th and 18th centuries. The old town is particularly well preserved, the architecture reflecting the varying cultural influences bestowed by this international community. UNESCO awarded it World Heritage Site status in 1999. Visit the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, built as a meeting place for merchants from China's Fujian province. On the riverfront enter Tan Ky House, a typical shophouse dating back to the 18th century that is still inhabited by the same family. Also Phung Hung House, mostly of wooden construction held up by 80 pillars. The attractive Japanese Covered Bridge houses a shrine to the God Tran Vo Ba De, whose powers are said to include control of the weather. If time permits at the end of the tour there is time for shopping before being returned to your accommodation.
